So it looks like I'll be trying to rewind those suckers soon. Since I know his bobbins and pole pieces are a pretty specific size, I was going to use a blank piece of fiberboard and cut out a new one using the warped one as a template but Tom Anderson offered to send me the 2 top pieces of the bobbin for free, just pay for shipping. I asked him what would caused the flatwork to warp like that and what I could do to prevent it, he said some lacquer of some sort might delay the fault but sweat and salty florida air are no friend of fiberboard. I cut all the wire off of the bobbin since uncoiling some of it didn't show anything obvious.Ī very small amount of rust had come through the pole pieces but after I sent Tom Anderson himself the pictures of my failed pickup so he could give me the rewind specs, he told me the flatwork was too warped to rewind from what he could see. I ended up scoring some used tom andersons on ebay and I'm going to try to rewind the top coil on both of the dead ones.

On a side-note, has anyone tried those GFS TruCoil II pickups ? Curious how they compare to the ones mentioned above considering they are less than half the price. I was looking at the MojoTone Quiet Coil Series, the DiMarzio Area 57 or Area 61's or maybe even Seymour Duncan STK-S4 or STK-S7 ? Which noiseless strat pickup would you consider replacing these Tom Andersons with ? I really love the clarity, sparkle, and sustain I get from them as well as the high output while retaining classic strat sound. But they don't sound like the Tom Andersons. My '91 American Standard strat still has the Van Zandt Blues pickups I installed in 96. None of my other guitars ever had to have their pickups replaced like this. And they are semi impossible to find used. Granted they've come down a bit from $129 each to $99 but that's still $20 more than most pickups. BUT I can't keep replacing pickups that often !!!! And especially not at the price of those Tom Andersons !

I play blues/rock/funk and they have a really sparkly strat tone when you split the coils and they are actually louder in split coil mode than in full humbucking mode, which I use as sort of a boost between rhythm/lead tone. So here's my dilemma : I absolutely love the sound of those Tom Anderson stacked hums. I replaced the bridge and middle pickups in May 2012 and the neck pickup had to be replaced in november 2014.įast forward to today, august 2019 and the bridge and middle died again. I emailed Tom Anderson himself and he recommended the Tom Anderson SA2 as replacements since the SD2 were no longer produced. It originally came with Tom Anderson SD2 stacked humbuckers with a coil tap switch which I loved the sound of but the pole pieces ended up rusting out and shorting the bobbins after about 10 years of playing all sorts of indoor and outdoor gigs here in South Florida. My #1 guitar is a korina body/birdseye maple neck strat type guitar built by a local luthier. Let me give you some quick background on my issue.
